Reacting to a statement made by the Yimchungrü Tribal Council (YTC) that appeared in local dailies on August 22, United Sangtam Likhüm Bümji (USLB) has clarified late Sukhalu Sumi’s occupation of land at Pungro.
USLB vice president Yangkhaba Sangtam and general secretary Selitong Sangtam stated in a joint press release that late Sukhalu spent more than 10 days at Sanphure Village, asking for allotment of land to establish a village.
The USLB claimed that after a long persuasion, under Naga tradition and customs, the Sanphure village of the Sangtam community allotted the land and late Sukhalu had established the village accordingly.
It stated that issues relating to village taxation led to misunderstandings and late Sukhalu Sumi was killed, although not over the land issue, and added that the grandchildren of late Sukhalu were aware of the history. USLB further claimed that Pongren village was established by citizens of Sanphure village, and they being the “real land owners”, the question of vacating the village did not arise. Meanwhile, the USLB has alleged that the sitting MLA of Kiphire district for the last eight years, T. Torechu was being “shadowed by YTC” and was functioning as a “tribal MLA,” victimizing on Sangtams.
USLB stated that work programs from 2003 to 2010 will speak for themselves, and further claimed that the USLB was ready to “lay the facts and figures”.
