As part of the agitational programme of AASU against the Government and NHPC authority’s decision to construct mega dams in Arunachal Pradesh, the Tezpur unit of AASU in collaboration with Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) on Monday submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur, Rajesh Prashad, demanding immediate sending back of the three barges and three ships carrying turbines and other equipment for the Lower Subansiri Hydel Project from Tezpur Jahaj Ghat.
It may be mentioned here that three barges and three ships of Bangladesh arrived at Tezpur on August 18 last from Kolkata with turbines and its casings along with four different valves for Lower Subansiri Hydel Project.
On August 21, the NHPC authority had engaged a large number of labourers to construct an approach road by using stones, bricks at Jahajghat. Since then the Tezpur unit of AASU has been adamant on not allowing unloading of the materials.
Tezpur unit AASU president Nitul Bora talking to this correspondent stated that the representation submitted to the local administration also encloses the report of the expert committee regarding the hydel project.
“AASU has been fighting against this anti-people mega hydel project since its inception. Accordingly we have already kicked off various agenda here to prevent the NHPC authority’s work including offloading of dam’s equipment in this serious and public interest-related issue TMPK activists have been camping here to assist us. Until and unless the authority concerned takes a positive decision in this regard, we shall continue our agitation with the moral support of people of Assam including different nationalist organizations,” the AASU leader said.
