Yongam village has taken pride in not only becoming the largest cardamom grower but also the largest supplier of organic vegetables in Longleng district since the declaration of the village as ‘Vegetable village’ in the year 2006.
According to Yongam village council chairman Z. Leiang Phom, with the introduction of various programmes by land resource and horticulture department, the mindset of the farmers towards cultivation have changed from unproductive and destructive jhum cultivation to sustainable farming.
Farmers have opted for large cardamom, orange, arecanuts, rubber cultivation and so on.
So far 185 hac have been covered under cardamom plantation and Yongam village envisions that in future cardamom cultivation would be the main source of income for the farmers of the area.
The village council chairman stated that as per the existing trend of the interest of the farmers, cardamom plantation was expected to be doubled up within two-three years.
Meanwhile, Yongam village council (YVC) has expressed gratitude to department of land resource for promoting progressive farmers and women SHG, DPO Menouseituo Tseikha for introducing innovative programmes in the village.
Yongam village council also thanked the department for assisting Angshai Phom a progressive farmer who invented indigenous tool for harvesting large cardamom and also acknowledged horticulture department and DHO Longleng for adapting the village as ‘Vegetable village’.
