A tripartite meeting of the Government of Manipur (GoM), United Naga Council (UNC) and the Government of India (GoI) was held on Tuesday at North Block, New Delhi to address the representation submitted to the prime minister for an alternative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur.
According to a statement received from the UNC publicity wing, the meeting was convened by the union home secretary at the instance of the home minister of India, as expressed by the latter in his meeting with the UNC team on September 14.
It was stated that the government of India appreciated the UNC for suspension of economic blockade to create a congenial atmosphere for the dialogue. UNC said it was assured by the government of Manipur that the price tags on the Naga leaders by the government of Manipur, the issue of conducting a judicial enquiry into the May 6 incident at Mao Gate wherein 2 students were shot dead and more than 100 injured in Manipur State Armed Force violence and the lifting of prohibitory order 144 CrPC and militarisation of the hill areas would be taken up in right earnest with the concerned authorities as a confidence building measure.
It was informed that the venue and time for the next round of talks and the level of delegation of parties were also discussed and agreed upon. It may be mentioned that the UNC recently decided to temporarily suspend economic blockade enforced along National Highways (NH-39 and NH-53) in Manipur in view of commencement of a serious process with union government for securing alternative arrangement for Nagas in Manipur.
UNC said resumption of agitation would depend on the progress made.
