Nagaland University (NU) vice chancellor Prof. K. Kannan on Saturday graced the 4th freshers’ social cum annual day of Unity College Dimapur. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, the VC lauded the college for producing many toppers in just a span of four years and asserted that such was not a small feat for a young college.
He said the improvement of education in Nagaland should not be influenced by outsiders, but that it should come within the state’s educational system itself. Prof. Kannan called upon the college to introduce and provide maximum avenues for its students to excel.
He maintained that students should be given room for growth and not just by way of strict monitoring.
Meanwhile, the VC also lauded the efforts of teachers while citing example of a higher secondary school in Longleng district, which is affiliated to NU. He stated that although he was initially dismayed to learn that the school was the only higher secondary school in the entire district, he felt that the efforts of the teachers were laudable as they were proficient to produce students scoring above 50% in exams even with “not very good facilities”.
Also sharing his own experiences in the field of education, the VC expressed hope that new avenues would be created for the people of Nagaland during his tenure in NU.
He said 11 departments were created in NU after he was designated to the university and four more departments were set to come up in 2010.
Stating that he was hopeful for the faculty strength of the university to reach 200 before his tenure was complete; Prof. Kannan expressed optimism that Nagaland would produce top citizens and leaders of the country through the educational system of the state and also through the university.
Highlights of the programme included release of the college magazine by chief guest and cultural show presented by students.
