Flush-out operation against the GNLA militants in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region will continue, while a cadre of the Liberation A’chik Elite Force (LAEF) militant was killed in an encounter, a police official said today. The counter-insurgency operation yielded good results with the busting of the training camp and headquarters of the GNLA in the Durama hills yesterday.
“Our men are still in the jungle and behind the GNLA militants who escaped from their hideouts,” East Garo Hills District Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtynger said.
He said the two GNLA camps - training and general headquarters - were destroyed and neutralized booby traps. Dismissed Deputy Superintendent of Police-turned GNLA Chairman, Champion R Sangma and the outfit’s “Commander-in-Chief”, Sohan D Shira were among those who escaped from the hideout yesterday after a brief encounter.
A Chinese made hand grenade, huge quantity of food rations and livestock and uniforms of GNLA cadres were also recovered from the camp.
Meanwhile, an unidentified LAEF militant cadre was killed in an encounter at Shahlang in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district.
