A convict under custody at East Police Station Dimapur was found dead on Thursday morning leading to accusations against police while the latter vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
The victim, identified as Nazim Uddin (25) was convicted for murder and dacoity and taken to police custody along with four other convicts for interrogation on Thursday in another case. Nazim was undergoing sentence at Central Jail Dimapur before being brought to East police station.
According to a statement issued by SP Dimapur Z. Mero, police claimed that the convict hanged himself with a ligature (cloth) in the toilet of the male lock up cell of East PS. Police said that the convict had apparently died due to asphyxia.
Viewing the incident as a judicial death, an inquest was conducted by executive magistrate EAC T Lankonsen in the presence of independent witness. All formalities including the post mortem was video recorded as documentary evidence, police added.
Police said there were more than ten inmates inside the cell when the incident took place, but added that preliminary inquiry ruled out any foul play as the condition of the body indicated signs of anti-mortem hanging. Mero disclosed that an internal inquiry has been set up under addl SP Dimapur for investigating the incident.
However, relatives of Nazim alleged that he died due to excessive use of force by the police during interrogation. They also claimed that the four other convicts were in pitiable condition due to third degree interrogation method applied by police. The body of deceased was later handed over to the relatives after conducting the post mortem.
