Communication and Information Technology Minister A. Raja Tuesday hoped the security-related issues between the Indian government and Research in Motion (RIM) that runs the Blackberry services will be resolved.
“I hope the issue will be resolved... we are periodically reviewing,” Raja said on the sidelines of an industry conference. The government had threatened to block some of the BlackBerry services if the Canadian company failed to come up with tools to monitor them by the end of August. However, it extended the deadline for another two months from Sep 1 after RIM provided solutions for security agencies to monitor the company’s BlackBerry corporate email service.
The government said it will examine the efficacy of the technical solutions given by the smart phone maker. It has also pushed RIM to set up its server in the country.
The department of telecommunications has also been asked to provide a report on the feasibility of services provided through a server located in India within two months. According to the home ministry, any communication through the telecom networks should be accessible by the law enforcement agencies and all telecom service providers, including third parties, will have to comply with this. As per the official figures, there are over 10 lakh Blackberry users in India.
