International Ozone Day was observed in Manipur today with state level function organised by Manipur Pollution Control Board in Imphal.
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on this day (September 16) every year. This event commemorates the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987.
This year’s theme was “Ozone layer protection: governance and compliance at their best” calls on countries to recognize “the central role of good governance in pursuit of environmental goals,” as the world marks the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16.
Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the Manipur Pollution Control Board, MLA E Dwijamani called upon the people to act locally for saving the environment.
Expressing concern over the changing climatic condition of the region, he said that if adequate measures were not taken to conserve the environment, the famous North East region of the country known for its pleasant climate would not remain a worthy place for living beings.
He further said that conservation of environment requires a broad framework, clear targets and a gradual approach to implementation. The Montreal Protocol has been recognized around the world but successful implementation to good governance, enabling successful implementation of and compliance with the provisions of the Protocol.
