St. Joseph School (SJS) is an educational institution of the Catholic Church, belonging to the Diocese of Kohima and managed by the St. Joseph Parish, Chumukedima. The school forms part of the saving mission of the church, especially for education in the faith. Guided by the educational policy of the Catholic Church, the school was founded to bring school education within the reach of the common man.
Set in abundantly lush green campus at Chumukedima, SJS combines exquisite natural beauty and the environments of modern times, to lay an ideal seat for academic pursuits. SJS began its journey in 1998 and is striving towards excellence in the region where educational institutions are mushrooming up in every nook and corner. Today this institution is a modern, friendly, educational leader, renowned for academic excellence, a welcoming atmosphere and strong community.
SJS was established on 11 February 1998 and received the Board’s (NBSE) recognition on 21 December 2006. It was inaugurated by Asangla Imti, the then E.A.C. of Chumukedima and blessed by Rt. Rev. Dr. Jose Mukala, the then Bishop of Kohima. Rev. Fr. Mathew Keemattam was the first principal of the school. The school was started with the strength of 55 students accommodating in two classes, viz., Lower KG and Upper KG. Twenty one students from the school appeared Class X exams for the first time in 2009 and produced 100% pass percentage. The school obtained permission to upgrade the school as high school in the year 2007 and got its recognition for high school education in 2010.
SJS is blessed with competent and committed faculty members who impart quality education to their students. It is, in fact, through their hard labour that the school is scaling new heights. Rev. Fr. Sabu Chenackal is the principal of the school. Rev. Fr. Loyola Antony serves as the Vice-Principal. Sr. Reetha, from the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, is the Headmistress. She is backed by two more sisters, namely, Sr. Bernadette and Sr. Sandraline. Sr. Magdalene is the Superior of the St. Joseph Convent. Besides, the Managing Board consists of persons with respectable social standings from the locality.
SJS has 1500 students who are invaluable assets to the SJS community. Education without well groomed personality is like a flower without fragrance. Having understood this dictum, the students are striving hard and grooming themselves even as they clip off their inhibitions and add strength to their skills and talents. There is a growing aspiration among the student folk in SJS to become genuine trendsetters who can explore their potential for progress with deep sense of creativity, openness and variety.
The science lab has more than hundred equipments, which enable the students to learn through experiments. The lab contains various apparatus such as physical balance, weight box, simple microscope, compound microscope, spirit lamp, magnifying glass, funnels, measuring cylinder, magnesium coil, test-tubes, carbon di-sulphide, methylene blue, bromine water etc. The school computer Lab has a large network of latest computers. There are over 50 computers provided to the students and classes are held on both theoretical and practical. This provides the students an impetus to get into any professional courses in future.
The library contains the classified books on general knowledge, journalism, publishing, newspapers, religion, Bible, catholic literature, language etc., and a multimedia lab fashioned to make the classrooms more interactive and fun.
The flower garden is designed to provide a peaceful refuge to the students and the visitors. The statue of Jesus the Redeemer erected in the school campus overlooking the school building is a welcoming sight to behold. SJS has a magnificent gate which welcomes the students with an atmosphere of happy entry. It may be mentioned that the gate is dedicated to Lt. Bishop Abraham, the first Bishop of Nagaland and the one who bought the land.
Games and sports is an integral part of the school curriculum for which a wide range of facilities are available such as school stadium. Scouts and Guides form an important activity of SJS. It is an informal educational program designed to be carried out in groups with adult leadership. The members participate in various jamborees. During the jamboree, the Scouts and Guides attend camps, play games, and learn about other cultures. The organization provides opportunities for the members to develop skills, make friends, and become a vital part of their communities.
There has been a growing awareness among people with regard to the climate change that dangerously affects our beautiful world. In order to address this issue locally, SJS formed an eco-club in the campus. The eco-club tries to highlight the harmful influences of pollution of air, water, and soils; destruction of habitats, devastation of hundreds of plant and animal species; and the depletion of nonrenewable resources. At the same time, the club also emphasizes more on solutions that will possibly reverse the negative effects of human activities.
With a view to give special attention to the weaker students the school has hostel facilities both for boys and girls. They are strictly monitored by the boarding master round the clock.
SJS gives serious note to irregular attendance, habitual idleness, and disobedience. The students are encouraged and endorsed to speak in English in the school premises in order to obtain a command over spoken English. Magazines, papers or books other than textbooks are strictly forbidden to be brought to the school. Taking drugs in any form, smoking and chewing betel nut or tobacco and consumption of alcohol are strictly forbidden. Fancy items such as electronic gadgets are not permitted in the school.
