Ending four days of revelry and celebration, idols of goddess Durga and her children were immersed by devotees in Dhansiri River, Dimapur on Vijaya Dashami Sunday.
Banks of the Dhansiri wore a festive look, as puja organisers came in colourful processions to the accompaniment of drums to immerse idols of the goddess and her four children -- Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartik. Idols of around 46 puja committees from Dimapur were immersed in Dhansiri river and witnessed by thousands of people.
Hundreds of devotees, including the young, joined hands to gently lower the idols into the river. The immersion ceremony symbolises the end of the goddess’ annual sojourn to her paternal home and return to her husband Lord Shiva. Tight security arrangements made by Dimapur police and the volunteers of Hindu Seva Samiti contributed towards the peaceful process of immersion at the river bank.
Meanwhile, Hindu Seva Samiti has expressed gratitude to district administration, police department, various puja committees and people of Dimapur for contributing towards the peaceful celebration of the festival. This year nearly 55 puja committees celebrated Durga puja in Dimapur.
