Teachers agitation call off in Meghalaya

The agitating teachers school teachers in Meghalaya today called off their two-week long indefinite strike after the state government assured them in writing to clear their pending 40 per cent arrears.
On October 14 , the state government issued a notification to release arrears of the agitating school teachers before the forthcoming Christmas much after students’ have been affected by the teachers strike. Higher and Technical Education Minister , M Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the government has issued a notification to release the arrears of the deficit school teachers before the christmas.
The indefinite strike launched by the deficit school teachers under the banner of - Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) and Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers’ and Employees’ Association (GHDSTEA) over the last 15 days has affected 50,000 students in the State.
“We have decided to suspend our agitation after the government gave us in writing that our pending arrears will be cleared before Christmas,” KJDSTA President, ED Nongsiang said.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had said the government would release the arrears, running up to Rs 60 crore, before Christmas this year after “careful analysis of the State’s financial position.
