Manipur Police completed 118 years of its glorious existence Tuesday since first raised as the state military police in 1892.
The day was celebrated at the parade ground of 1st battalion Manipur Rifles, Imphal in a simple and austere manner with Manipur Governor Gurbachand Jagat as chief guest and Chief Minister was also present on the occasion.
The chief guest speaking on the occasion said the state police have served the people of Manipur with devotion, courage, conviction and professionalism.
He said that in-spite of enormous challenges over the years on many fronts like insurgency, internal conflicts; the Manipur Police has been able to cope with it despite constraints.
Asserting that the state has been passing through a difficult time during the last three decades or so, Gurbachand observed that militants are equipped with sophisticated weapons and technological tools, and have acquired expertise and new modus operandi.
“It is, therefore, no mean achievement for the state police to have successfully combated the menace of militant activities with the help of other security forces
On the law and order front, he said that although the violence has been considerably controlled yet the incidents of kidnapping, abductions, extortions, throwing of hand grenades, etc., have gone up as a result, the money which should be utilized for development works is being diverted by the UGs and thus the people suffer because of lack of development, he said.
This kinds of UGs activities, he further said generates an environment of fear and insecurity amongst the people, he said stressing the need to focus on these nefarious activities and ensure that underground and overground structure responsible for these extortions, etc. is exposed and broken down.
“It is our duty to let the people know as to how this money is being forcibly collected and how it goes to fund the luxurious life style of UGs living aboard and how it is being used in investment in property and other things,” Gurbachand said.
