A fact-finding team from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) is slated to arrive in Meghalaya’s state capital, Shillong on Wednesday to study the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) imbroglio that arose from the appointment of A.N Rai as vice chancellor of the university.
NEHU students have been agitating since October 11, the day Rai took charge as vice-chancellor. The students’ community under the banner of North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and Meghalaya Tribal Students’ Coordination Committee (MTSCC) are demanding a tribal vice chancellor to head one of the country’s premier central university.
The three-member team, led by MHRD secretary Vibha Puri Das, is scheduled to meet Meghalaya Governor R.S. Mooshahary, who is also the Rector of NEHU and chief secretary W.M.S Pariat to discuss the imbroglio which has affected the premier central university, a senior official said.
The fact-finding team visiting the state comes after the Meghalaya government demanded that a MHRD central team visit the state to sort out the imbroglio in the university.
Mooshahary had met Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and urged him to send a central team to Meghalaya to sort out the stand-off between the students and NEHU. The Governor had also apprised President Pratibha Patil about the issue.
