A fact-finding team of the union ministry of human resource development (HRD), looking into student protests over the appointment of A.N Rai as vice-chancellor of NEHU, will submit its report to HRD minister Kapil Sibal, even as the agitating students have set Oct 29 as new deadline for removal of Rai.
The student community under the banner of NEHU students’ union and Meghalaya tribal students’ coordination committee (MTSCC) are demanding that a tribal VC to head the varsity.
The three-member fact-finding team, led by HRD secretary Vibha Puri Das arrived here late Wednesday evening and held meetings with the faculty and non-teaching staff of NEHU and students unions of the varsity.
The team comprising additional secretary (higher education) Sunil Kumar and UGC vice chairman Ved Prakash also heard the views of Meghalaya governor RS.Mooshahary, also the rector of NEHU, deputy chief minister BM Lanong, education minister M Ampareen Lyngdoh and chief secretary W.M.S. Pariat and discussed at length on the NEHU imbroglio.
During their meeting with the agitating students, the central team requested the student leaders to honour the notification issued by President Pratibha Patil appointing Rai as NEHU vice chancellor.
Kumar said that the minister will take a final decision on their finding to resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, the students unions criticised the three-member fact-finding member team for not visiting the NEHU campus and to understand the ground realities of the issue.
