An unexpected hailstorm occurred at Phuhgimi village and Metsale village under Phek district on October 19 around 4pm, causing damage to the paddy fields which was ready for harvest
According to an official bulletin, Phek DC, Mikha Lomi along with Phek SDO (C ) Razouvolie Dozo, Chozuba EAC Anoka M. Assumi, Zunheboto DCO (cultural) Yeveyi Sapu, Chozuba SDAO (Agri.) and host of DBs visited the affected area on October 22 to take stock of the situation.
While interacting with the village leaders, DC stated the situation as unfortunate causing distress and qualms to the entire people. However, he encouraged the villagers not to lose heart but “to come closer to God because God can do everything”.
He also asked the villagers not to panic but to apply their mind and go for alternate cropping, adding the government was concerned about the incident and assured them that he would take the loss assessment report and forward to higher authority for further action.
He donated a sum of `one lakh to the Phuhgim and `75,000 to Metsale Village as immediate relief.
According to the villagers such type disaster occurred in the year 1973 on November 3 and on October 19, 2010 after a gap of 37 years.
The hailstorm not only destroyed crops but many trees, bamboos, fruits and vegetables.
Almost all the households in the village were affected by the hail-storm, stated Z. Sapu, a social worker from Phuhgim village in a press release.
Meanwhile, Phughimi Village Council (PVC) chairman Zaneo has expressed gratitude to SDO (agriculture) Phek, district administration, Doordarshan and local media for facilitating due coverage on the “tragic calamity”.
The council also thanked Er. Vekho Swuro for providing relief to the people, and those individuals who extended support towards the village.
