Promoting awareness on women’s rights

An awareness campaign on women’s rights was held today jointly organized by Mokokchung Law College and State Legal Service Authority at Longkumer Kilem, Mokokchung.
Prof. A. Lanunungsang, Dean of Social Sciences Nagaland University, Lumami who was the main speaker at the program said gender based debate is prominent in today’s context and that with the advent of education; women’s participation is gradually shifting to a new paradigm. He also said it was God’s will to provide women its due rights but it was men who suppress them, adding there was adequate provisions for uplift and protection of women in the form of framed laws.
He lamented that laws were not practiced and utilized in its fullest form, with women becoming the victims of society often.
The speaker also shared the example of Meira Paibi’s of Manipur and the courage of Irom Sharmila etc. Professor suggested since Church play an important role in the society; it must therefore educate the masses on this issue.
DC Mokokchung Lithrongla G. Chishi while giving the introduction said women in society should be acknowledged.
“Society must look upon women not as a weaker sex but as a prominent foundation of a social structure”, she added. She also called upon women to strive unceasingly for the desired goal to embrace a society where there is no discrimination and inequality.
The program was attended by large number of womenfolk, besides legal experts from Mokokchung Law College led by its principal Temjenkaba who deliberated on the constitutional rights of women and legal procedures to deal with those who suppress the rights given to women.
