Maruti 800: Crafting Maruti’s success

Maruti 800 is a car that redefined the Indian automobile industry. For many it means the dream of owning a car coming true and even today it holds a proud place in the hearts of many an Indian.
In recent times there are rumors in the market that the Maruti 800 has gone out of production. However, Maruti Suzuki India Limited had decided that the production and sale of the Maruti 800 would continue as before. For customers who expect great quality and superior mileage at a very reasonable price, the Maruti 800 still remains the leading model from the Maruti stable.
The model will continue to remain available across Indian except in those 13 cities where Bharat Stage (BS) IV emission norms have come into force from April 2010. In response to the rumours of the Maruti 800 going out of production, high officials of the company have clarified that there is no question of stopping production of that car which, even today, sells higher than others.
According to the highly placed officials of the company, Maruti Suzuki will focus on the sales of Marti 800 in the towns and villages of the country, so that the customers can own a good quality car without paying high prices for expensive cars. The ex-showroom price of the Maruti 800 in Guwahati starts at 2.14 lakhs.
Launched in December 1983, the Maruti 800 has, till date, achieved record sales of 28 lakh cars. In the first year of its launch, only 852 cars were sold. In 1986-87, the car achieved the status of a bestseller, establishing a new record of selling 50000 cars. The year 1999-2000 saw the model achieve its peak sales record at 1, 89,061 cars.
The story of Indian auto export started with the Maruti 800. In 1986-8 7, Maruti Suzuki exported 64 Maruti 800 cars. The model’s quality; low maintenance costs, easy handling, compactness and superior mileage has endeared it to the customers in France, England, Italy, Germany, Greece, CIS countries, Africa and Latin America. Very soon the export figure of Maruti 800 is expected to touch 20000 units per year.
The Maruti 800 also catalyzed the company’s step in exporting cars overseas. In a short time, more than 2 lakh cars were exported out of India. Maruti Suzuki continued to keep exporting the Maruti 800 to a number of countries, among whom the markets of Algeria and Egypt turned out to be enthusiastic about the car. Maruti 800 sales also started and kept increasing in our neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
