The general assembly of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) -- teaching and non-teaching - has declared Prof Pramod Tandon, the vice-chancellor of the NEHU as “persona non grata” for violating the university statutes.
The general assembly which was held yesterday held Prof Tandon responsible for bringing down reputation of the NEHU by earning the dubious distinction of being the first vice chancellor to be summoned to the court to face charges of contempt. “We have resolved not to recognize him as the vice chancellor of NEHU and declared that he is not entitled to function in the post”, a resolution passed by the general assembly said.
The meeting also decided that NEHU registrar Lambha Roy being a subordinate officer has no authority to notify Prof Tandon’s continuance in office after the expiry of his term on September 12.
Though Prof Tandon’s term ended on September 12, the Human Resource Development has asked the university Registrar to follow the university’s statute and allow the present vice-chancellor to continue in office till the Centre finds a replacement.
However, the university employees opposed to the HRD’s directive and resolved that the university registrar, being a subordinate officer, had no authority to notify Pramod Tandon’s continuance in office even after the expiry of his term.
Meanwhile, the Academic Council meeting of the university slated for October 1 where vice chancellor normally presides also postponed by the Deputy Registrar citing absence of clarification from the Ministry of Human Resources Development as to who should preside over the meeting.
“If the status of chairman of academic council is doubtful, then it showed that continuation of Prof Tandon as vice chancellor is illegal”, Joint Action Committee (JAC) chairman Prof. SB Prasad said.
