Revamping rural economy through science, technology

A meeting of rural technology action group (RuTAG), Technology complex, IIT Guwahati was organised at National Research Centre on Mithun, Jharnapani, Nagaland on September 27. The meeting was organized with an aim to identify the challenging and need based problems concerning rural economy of Nagaland, and addressing the same through science and technological interventions for revamping the rural economy of Nagaland.
The meeting was attended by scientists from National Research Centre on Mithun, Jharnapani, and ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Nagaland Centre, Jharnapani, Nagaland, faculty from the department of information technology, Nagaland University, Dimapur, Ex-Dean SASARD, Nagaland University, Medziphema, Dr. Chandan Rajkhowa, Director, NRCM, Dr Akali Sema, Director, Central Institute of Horticulture, Medziphema, Dr. B. P. Bhat, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex, Nagaland Centre, Dr. A.K. Goswami, special consultant RuTAG – NE, Technology Complex IIT, Guwahati.
The scientists from NRC on Mithun and ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region presented the technologies developed by them and different technologies to be refined for easier adoption by the farmer and bottle-necks in adopting different technologies.
Dr. A. K. Goswami presented about the activities of RuTAG in different part of the country and its role in developing or refining the technologies suitable for rural people. During discussion, few technologies were identified for further refinement for making them user friendly and economically viable like development of water harvesting structure for rain fed area in the hilly region, development of user friendly ensiling methods for preservation of fodders on small scale to feed the animals during lean season, standardization of protocols for preservation of fermented products of bamboo shoots and soybean, development of pico-hydropower for hilly areas and designing suitable device for grain preservation on small scale suitable for rural areas.
The technologies identified by the RuTAG mission will be refined further and finally be to the users in easily understandable and workable mode.
