North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) teachers, non-teaching staff and students Tuesday opposed the appointment of new university vice-chancellor (V-C) Prof A.N Rai as the successor of Prof Pramod Tandon. Union ministry of human resources development Monday appointed Rai, who was the V-C of Mizoram University, after Tandon’s tenure ended September 12 last. However, the joint action committee (JAC) of NEHU comprising of teaching and non-teaching staffs and the Meghalaya tribal students’ coordination committee (MTCC) have resolved to oppose Rai’s appointment. JAC chairman S.B Prasad expressed shocked over the appointment of “tainted man” in the prestigious NEHU. MTCC chairman Kynpham Kharlyngdoh said it has set a deadline till October 8 next for MHRD to de-notify the appointment of Rai. Urging the centre to appoint local tribals as next V-C, the student leader said: “We have many local tribals who have what it takes to occupy the top post in NEHU.”
