Election to the posts of president, vice president and treasurer for the NPCC would take place on Wednesday starting 10 am to 1 pm at Congress Bhavan, Kohima.
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has deputed union minister for DoNER and mines Bijoy Krishna Handique as a special Poll Observer to oversee the elections. He arrived state capital Tuesday evening. The AICC had deputed Pradesh Returning Officer (PRO) incharge of Nagaland H K Patil assisted by Pronay Rabha, member Nagaland Pradesh Election Authority, Anand Prasad Sethi, member Central Election Authority to oversee the entire process of the conduct of election.
Ad-hoc NPCC president I. Imkong and S I Jamir are in the race for president. Both are sitting Congress MLA in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. A total of 10 candidates have filed their papers for the six posts of vice president and two candidates filed nominations for post of Treasurer.
However, vice presidential candidate, R. L. Akumba ex-MLA has decided to ‘retire’ from the contest “ in the greater interest of the party”. Akumba in his letter has requested the NPCC PRO to accept his offer and delete his name from the list of candidates. He assured fullest support and co-operation to strengthen the party in future.
It may be recalled that on September 17 the NPCC elections was countermanded due to hooliganism when some party workers pelted stones and damaged ballot boxes. Following the disruption AICC announced a re-poll on September 20 but further postponed indefinitely.
