With regard to the purported torching of one oil tanker by miscreants October 5, between Zakhama and Viswema, reported in local dailies October 6, the Kohima police today clarified that driver of the oil tanker (MN-03-0271), in an attempt to cover up his illegal activity, set the truck on fire. A clarification statement issued by Kohima police PRO Melite Kapfo said on verification it was found that the tanker was carrying only 4,000 liters instead of 12,000 liters (full capacity). The driver identified as one Ranjit Gathana, son of Dil Bahadur, Erang village part-2, Imphal confessed that he deliberately lit the truck on fire by pouring kerosene into truck cabin and the rear tyre, police said. According to police, the driver resorted to arson in order to hide his illegal activity of disposing at least 8,000 liters of oil at Khatkhati. In the light of the discovered facts, police further clarified that the accused was none other than the driver himself. “No underground activists or any local villagers in the vicinity are involved,” added the police.
