Two powerful organisations in Meghalaya today asked President Pratibha Patil to revoke the appointment of Prof. AN Rai as vice-chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) while demanding for an appointment of an indigenous person to the post.
Prof Rai, an eminent bio-chemist and former vice chancellor of Mizoram University, was appointed as vice chancellor of NEHU after Prof Pramod Tandons tenure as vice chancellor ended on September 12.
"We are deeply frustrated with the decision to appoint a person with tainted credentials is appointed as vice chancellor of NEHU," Federation Khasi Jaintia and Garo People's leader, Joe Marwein said.
"We do not understand why a VC of Mizoram University, a Central University, be appointed in NEHU, another Central University? Why should Mizoram University be destabilized in such a manner? ," Khasi Student's Union Chief Samuel Jyrwa asked.
In the letter, the KSU Chief also demanded that a well-known academician from the region and preferably a tribal with academic and administrative experience be appointed as Vice Chancellor in NEHU.
