NGO delegation from UK visits Akumen village

Akumen village under Mokokchung district bordering with Assam’s Jorhat district was blessed with holistic visit by a team of NGO delegation from the UK starting from November 1.
It all started in 2005 when a women delegation from Southwick Community Church (U.K.) led by one Alemla Twiss (Lirmen lady settled in UK) and Rev. Lynda Hulcoop visited the village.
In the later years, the team from UK in consultation with Akumen Baptist Church and village community undertook several community developmental works for uplift of the village. These included setting up and sponsoring of a community dispensary with a visiting doctor and a midwife, repairing of the village approach road with construction of three RCC culverts, sponsoring of an additional teacher in government run LP school, supervised by VEC under communitisation programme.
It also impart different vocational training to women folks of the community for self earning, sponsoring of animal and chicken rearing for economic means for every family in the village, imparting Christian education and different greeting card making to children under 5-10 age group, rain water harvesting for community and construction of a large craft and training centre hall.
According to Er. Temsu Wathi Ao, district informatics officer (NIC), deputy commissioner’s office, Mokokchung and consultant for Akumen project, Akumen village, a part of parent Lirmen village is gearing up to have its own drinking water source with MDPE piping sponsored by “Operation Agri”, a UK based NGO the project execution wing of the British Baptist Council.
Presently, the team is engaged in imparting health care and hygiene to the women folks, accounting procedures to the village functionaries including school teachers, giving training to the school children including school drop outs with games and spots activities and providing health check up to the village community.
The “Akumen Olympic” would be organized on November 6 where children, youngsters, elderly people of the village and guests would participate in the mega event.
