Reacting to the news item which appeared in sections of the local dailies on checking prices of bricks, the Brick Field Owners Union (BFOU) clarified that they have been following the rates as fixed by the district administration even though they were suffering loses. Further BFOU asserted that no brick field owner have sufficient stocks to meet the market demands and claimed that none of them were involved in black-marketing. However, without dismissing reports on ‘illegal trading’ of bricks, the owners opined that some unscrupulous elements may be involved by importing bricks from neighbouring towns of Bokajan, Diphu and some parts of Assam. Welcoming any move by the district administration to check the stocks, the union president Birendra Singh stated that they were ready to cooperate. They also informed that no middle party has been appointed or authorized to sell the bricks above the prescribed rates fixed by the administration. The BFOU also pointed out that the crisis was due to hike in price of raw materials like coal, fire wood, sand and shortage of labour. They also claimed that the price of coal has increased by 65-75% since last season and the labourers were demanding more wages due to increase in prices of essential commodities.
