Security in Imphal and Churachandpur has been tightened and an alert sounded ahead of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's brief four-hour tour in Manipur on Friday.
More than 3000 state security personnel along with 20 companies of CRPF and Assam Rifles and about 600 unarmed Village Defense Force (VDF) has been deployed ahead of the crucial visit.
Security arrangements have been made across the state to ensure that militants don't carry out any major strike and no disturbance comes up from civil organisations boycotting the visit, a senior police officer here said.
State home department got the green signal from the MHA regarding the security arrangements made for the visit of the Z+ category VVIP. Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh has personally inspected the area in Imphal, where Sonia is likely to visit.
Seventeenth civil organisations had earlier called for 15-hour state-wide general strike in protest against Central government's silence on the whereabouts of UNLF chief RK Meghen after reportedly arrested from Dhaka last month. Some sensitive areas in Imphal and Churachandpur have been put on high alert and deployments around sensitive installations have been strengthened," an intelligence officer said.
The Congress president will arrive at Imphal airport at 11 am from Delhi and will be airlifted to Khuga Dam site in Churachandpur district for the inaugurating the project.
Sonia would also visit Khwairamband market to inaugurate three multi-storey women's market sheds, the tribal market and also laid foundation stone for construction of Muslim girls' hostel.
