In yet another step towards improving the educational standards in the North East, Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma today laid the foundation stone of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) University campus here at Tura in State’s West Garo Hills district.
The ICFAI University, Meghalaya was established under the provisions of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India University Act enacted by the Meghalaya State Assembly and commenced its operations in 2007-2008.
“I congratulate ICFAI University Meghalaya on this landmark occasion. With the high standards of education that ICFAI is known for, and with the quality of infrastructure that ICFAI is proposing to build here at Tura, I will not be surprised if the Tura campus becomes a sort-after center for education both in the state and outside of it.” the chief minister said.
Stating ‘80 per cent of the youth in Meghalaya are unemployable’, Dr Sangma said education which is not job-oriented is meaningless education. “I would want to see a sea change with respect to the present scenario. I have lots of expectations from ICFAI in increasing the employability of our students,” he said.
The varsity’s vice chancellor, Prof. Y.K. Bhushan said the first phase of construction at the campus site would cover about 50,000 Sq. ft. provided for the requisite of academic and administration facilities.
Prof. Bhusahan further said that the University is offering academic programs in job oriented areas like Management, IT and Hotel & Tourism Management at Tura and Shillong. The University has 19 teaching staff in addition to visiting faculty to cater to present needs of the students.
“The University proposes to offer new programmes in the area of Engineering, Education, Information Technology, Allied Health Services, Sciences and Law,” he added
ICFAI also proposed to establish another permanent campus in Shillong in the near future.
