National Cave Research and Protection Organization (NCRPO) has asked union environment and forest minister Jairam Ramesh not to issue environmental clearance to Lafarge’s plan to set up Rs 1000 crore cement plant in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills district. The organisation also said that the proposed plant site was very close to two reserve forests - Narpuh and Saipung - proposed to become wildlife sanctuaries by the Meghalaya’s forest department. NCRPO chief Jayant Biswas in a petition submitted to Ramesh said the proposed plant would be a threat to the wildlife and the cave systems existing there.
