An Assam minister allegedly fled after his car mowed down a 65-year-old man.
The incident took place on the outskirts of central Assam town of Nagaon, around 100 km from here, on Tuesday morning when the minister was on his way back to Guwahati from his hometown in Karbi Anglong district. Eyewitnesses claimed that the victim, Bongshidhar Bora, who succumbed to injuries in the hospital later, was hit by a speeding ambassador car in which Veterinary and Hill Areas Development Minister Khorsing Engti was traveling, reports Express News Service.
“Immediately after the incident, the minister fled the scene in his escort vehicle to eventually take refuge at the circuit house in Nagaon,” a villager said.
“Why didn’t he take the victim to a nearby hospital instead,” he asked.
The police have refused to view this as a hit-and-run case. “The minister was traveling in an SUV,” said Nagaon district police chief Nitul Gogoi.
“We have arrested the driver,” he added.
The locals, it was learnt, seized and damaged the ambassador car. They demanded the minister visit the place and tender an apology.
Minister Khorsing Engti could not be contacted as he remained incommunicado.
