Miscreants loot Rs.80 lakhs in Kohima

In a broad daylight robbery, armed miscreants reportedly looted Rs.80 lakhs from SBI staff at gun point on Friday morning (11.30) around Siekhazou area, Kohima.
According to police, two staff of SBI Chedema branch was transporting the amount to be deposited at SBI main Branch Kohima in a private Santro car when three armed miscreants overpowered them near a speed-breaker and looted the amount at gun point. After taking hold of the amount, the armed miscreants reportedly blind-folded and tied the hands of two bank staff, and were later freed at Naga Bazaar along with the car.
Police on receiving information around 1.30 p.m, immediately conducted a joint frisking operation along with paramilitary forces, however no breakthrough or arrest could be made till the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered with the North Police Station and investigations were on. As per bank norms, smaller bank branch cannot keep cash more than Rs.10 lakh and in case of any excess; the cash has to be deposited in the nearest major branch. On the other hand, as per the state government standing order, transportation of any amount money more than Rs.10,000 has to be informed to the police for necessary escort and security.
However, with regard to Friday’s incident, both the security guards on bank duty and the state police were not informed nor were they asked for security escort for transporting the amount by the SBI, police said.
