Blast in Meghalaya’s Durga temple

A Durga temple in Meghalaya came under attack after suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebels hurled a grenade, official said Saturday. On Saturday night, suspected GNLA rebels lobbed a Chinese-made grenade at the temple in Warima market area in Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills district.
“The floor has been partially damaged and walls have blackened the due to the explosion but the idols inside the temple are intact,” Pravin Bakshi, the district deputy commissioner, said. Bakshi said that it appears to be the handiwork of the GNLA rebels to create fear-psychosis in the minds of the people.
“The police are investigating into it and a man-hunt is on nab the people behind the cowardice act,” he said. District police chief sylvester Nongtynger said that the situation is under control and the police is on the job to find out the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the Central Puja Committee has condemned the blast and urged the government to punish those involved in the barbaric act.
