Former M’laya Rajya Sabha MP dies

Meghalaya’s former Rajya Sabha MP Prof. Alexander Warjri today passed away following cardiac arrest. He was 84. He is survived by his son and daughter.
Prof. Warjri, an eminent historian was first elected as to the first house of the 60-member Assembly in 1972 after Meghalaya was carved out of Assam. He was also one of the active leaders during the hill state movement. He was elected on All Party Hills Leader Conference ticket from Mawkhar Assembly constituency. In 1978, he was unanimously elected as member of the Rajya Sabha during the regime of the three - flag government of DD Pugh.
The three-flag government a coalition of three regional parties -- the All Party Hill Leaders’ Conference (APHLC), the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the Public Demand Implement Committee (PDIC). Prof Warjri was also elected as Ward Commissioner of the Shillong Municipal Board in 1955 and was a Prof of History in St Anthony’s College, Shillong. He was also an active member of the Don Bosco Past Pupil and Catholic Association of Khasi and Jaintia.The mortal remains of Prof Warjri would be laid to rest at Laitumkhrah cemetery on November 5.
