Nagaland got the first heliport of its own on Monday with its formal inauguration by parliamentary secretary transport and mechanical engineering P. Dako Phom.
The Kohima Heliport is located at Lerie (also known as Taklu Ground). Inaugurating the heliport, Dako disclosed that the department was trying to establish a helipad in all the district headquarters but could not be materialized owing to fund constraints.
He said the department would try to improve the Kohima Heliport with more facilities and equipments. He also urged the people to care the government’s assets, as it was the community property. In his address chief secretary Lalthara said the Kohima Heliport could be used as the operation hub and also for the short fixed wing aircraft to land and take off.
In his introductory note, NST general manager Pekrusetuo Angami said that the helicopter was re-introduced in 2007, while the present Kohima Heliport at Lerie, was the initiative of chief minister in 2008. He said the chief minister landed twice on the heliport on trial basis. He also regretted that many at times the Assam Rifles used to complain about using their helipad.
However, with the formal inauguration of Kohima Heliport it would greatly benefit the people, he added.
Earlier the function was chaired by N. Hangsing, secretary transport department, invocation prayer said by Rev. Phomlee Van, Pastor Phom Baptist Church and vote of thanks delivered by Senti Pongener, Additional General Manager, NST.
