Call for proactive role in spreading HIV & AIDS awareness

‘World AIDS Day’ program was held here today at town hall Mokokchung jointly organized by Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) and district AIDS prevention and control unit (DAPCU). The program was graced by Bendang Lemtur IPS, SP Mokokchung as chief guest.
The SP articulated ‘World AIDS Day’ was a solemn occasion as it was being commemorated all over the world. The chief guest said the main root of AIDS was promiscuity in Nagaland and that Nagas would lose the battle against the deadly disease unless various organizations working for AIDS like NACO and NSACS wakes up to this issue.
He also believed that statistics and law of averaging was deceiving in this aspect, as according to him, statistics referred only to those people who have been tested, and further questioned about the status of those people who were yet to be tested.
Cautioning the gathering, he said AIDS sees no age, position and gender and called upon all to be proactive in spreading awareness to protect oneself from the deadly pandemic.
He also lamented how people were still ignorant and unaware of the treatments and facilities related to this disease. He reiterated that once a person was infected, he/she should seek treatment as the disease needs specialized treatment, and urged the youngsters to practice abstinence and self control and get involved in movements like True Love Waits (TLW) etc., in order to be safe from AIDS. The program was chaired by Bendang Walling, AGS AKM, and significance of the day was delivered by Makshi Jamir, DPO DAPCU. Short speeches were delivered by president AKM and Bendangwati convener N-Naga DAO Mokokchung unit. Dr. Medem Dy. Med. SP spoke on ‘Stop AIDS Keep the Promise – Universal access to Human Rights’, vote of thanks was delivered by M&E Asst. DAPCU.
Meanwhile, the day was also commemorated at Changtongya jointly organized by Grace Society and Belayer Changtongya. The program was held at Community Hall CTN graced by Tinutemsu, DIS CTN. The program was attended by Churches, Ward Chairmen, GBs, Watsu unit, student bodies and well wishers. An extempore speech was conducted on various topics to mark the day. Short speech on HIV and AIDS and significance of the day was delivered by Dr. Wapang (CHC CTN). (Correspondent)
KIPHIRE: A‘World AIDS Day’ was celebrated at Hopongkyu memorial hall Kiphire today. The programme was organized by KpNP+ on the theme ‘Universal access & Human right’ where hundreds of people attending the program. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. I Sungit Jamir, CMO Kiphire called upon the youth to play an important role to fight against HIV and AIDS. He said, “We should share our love with the people living with HIV and AIDS and fight the disease and not the person”.
Issac, program officer DACU, sharing solidarity with the people living with HIV and AIDS said, positive people should not be discriminated and reiterated that the programme was organized to bridge the gap between people and spread the message that prevention is the only way to protect oneself.
Erothe, president KpNP+ chaired the program while joint secretary KpNP+ gave a testimony, general secretary KpNP+ spoke on significance of the day and Tsaliba proposed the vote of thanks.
Meanwhile, Red ribbon club Zisaji Presidency College also organized a quiz competition in commemoration with ‘World AIDS Day’ where, Kyulongse, Arjun Gupta and Agnes bagged the first second and third respectively. The certificates were distributed by the program officer RRC ZPC. (Correspondent)
NPYC: Nagaland Pradesh Youth Congress (NPYC) today joined the rest of world in observing ‘World AIDS Day’ at Congress Bhavan Kohima. NPYC President Kuputo Shohe shared about the dreaded menace of HIV and AIDS in the state and called upon the youth to be aware and fight in preventing the disease. NPYC officials and volunteers also distributed HIV and AIDS related pamphlets, calendar, badges, poster in and around Congress office in a bid to spread awareness.
WOKHA: ‘World AIDS Day’ 2010 was commemorated in Wokha district at CMO conference hall with the theme ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. The programme was organized jointly by district aids prevention and control unit (DAPCU) and WNP+ and various NGOS. The program was chaired by Achum Patton, DPO (DAPCU) and Alphonse, Director RMYF as the main speaker.
Meanwhile the district HIV and AIDS scenario was presented by Lichumo Odyuo, ICTC Supervisor.
YASS and Shansham Mon: YASS and Shansham organization observed ‘World AIDS Day’ at Phomching Hq. with the theme ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’.
Speeches were delivered by chairman, Phomching Town Adhoc Council, headmaster, Good Samaritan School where they expressed their appreciation to the organizers for choosing Phomching to observe the programme. They further requested the organizer to avail more services especially to set up ICTC at Phomching Hq. After the formal programme, a volleyball tournament in commemoration of ‘World AIDS Day’ was organized where Phomching town students union walked away with Champion prize and VG team as the runner’s up prize.
