ABSI Dominic laid to rest

Hundreds of mourners today paid glowing tributes to the memory of ABSI late Kwerieheung Dominic Zeliang son of late Ikiengwang hailing from Poilwa village, who was shot dead in Purulia, West Bengal on December 2 by one IRB jawan. The coffin containing the body was flown from West Bengal to Guwahati from where the body was brought to Dimapur by chopper.
Paying homage to the departed soul on behalf of 10th NAP (IR), ABSI Yanbemo a close friend of late Dominic and witness to the incident, narrated the incident. He said that the constable, Purlemba first shot dead one West Bengal police personnel in the wee hours on Thursday.
On hearing the shots, Yanbemo said he and late Dominic rushed from their tents to investigate. They then heard a voice calling for help from a bunker then saw Purlemba standing behind them. When Dominic enquired from Purlemba about the firing, the latter slapped him, loaded the service rifle (AK) then fired a burst at Dominic, killing him on the spot. Yanbemo said since he had stood behind late Dominic, he escaped being shot. Another jawan who overpowered Purlemba disclosed that the latter claimed he was “Jesus”.
Expressing condolence to the bereaved family members, IGP, S.T. Sangtam disclosed that the state government has sanctioned ex-gratia of Rs. 3 lakh to the family members. He said the police headquarters has already taken into consideration the pension benefits and appointment in compensation entitled to the deceased family members.
Speaking at the funeral service, President of the Zeliangrong Baudi (Hoho) Dimapur condemned the incident and warned that the Hoho would not leave the matter till the accused was booked. Saying that the incident has hurt the sentiments of the community he demanded that the authority book the culprit at the earliest. “Fighting with enemies is different but being killed by an own comrade has hurt us badly. We are backward and out of thousands we have only a few officers,” he said. The Hoho described Late Dominic as a dedicated and honest police officer for whom the call of duty was precious above all else. “We have lost in him a great man and a far sighted young officer,” the Hoho said and added that he was God fearing man and a fearless man too in his duty. The Hoho said Late Dominic’s good example and inspiration would be cherished even in the days to come. The funeral service held at Army Signal Road Dimapur was attended by rank and file of the police, various organizations, family members, relatives and well wishers. A guard of honour was accorded before the body was laid to rest at Naga Cemetery Dimapur.
3-point demand
The ZBD has placed a three-point demand before DGP that included- institution of a high level probe and to investigate the cause of the killing and to book the culprit responsible as per the law; payment of extra ordinary pension and payment of ex-gratia to bereaved family with bond benefits; and granting of appointment on humanitarian ground to his younger brother Heuchingwangbe son of Late Ikiengwang to support his brothers and sisters.
Zeliang Welfare Association Dimapur also condemned the incident and described it as a “murder case” that cannot be compromised and demanded that the accused be immediately dismissed from service.
Born on June 2, 1982, late Dominic completed high school from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur and graduated from St. Joseph’s College Jakhama and obtained MA (political science) from Nagaland University. He had also served as a lecturer at St. Paul’s Higher Secondary, Dimapur.
He joined the police on January 22, 2008 and served as ABSI (R.O) attached with the 10th IRB Zadima till he was posted at West Bengal. He was awarded the best cadet award during his training period from North East Police Academy, Shillong.
Rich tributes were paid to the departed soul by 10th IRB, Zadima, Zeliangrong Baudi (Hoho), Dimapur; Zeliang Public Organization; Zeliang Officers’ Association Nagaland; Poilwa Lui Dimapur; Poilwa Youth Organization; Zeliang Welfare Association Dimapur; T. Khel Youth Poilwa and family members.
ZBN condemns
Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland (ZBN) has condemned the killing of K. Dominic Zeliang, ABSI (RO) and described it as “heinous and intolerable.”
ZBN through its general secretary, Azeu Namcyn Hau said the act of cowardice would not be tolerated by the Zeliangrong people and demanded the ‘harshest punishment’ to be awarded to the culprit.
Conveying condolences to the bereaved family, the ZBN urged the state government and the authority concerned to book the culprit at the earliest under relevant laws of the land, failing which it would take its own course of action. The ZBN said it would not be held responsible for any untoward incidents whatsoever.
