With the Hornbill Festival gaining popularity in the national and international arenas, the number of domestic and foreign tourists has increased this year.
Giving a rough figure of tourists in the state, the department of tourism informed that there were 60 plus foreign tourists and 1075 domestic tourists on the first day of the festival. Parliamentary secretary, tourism, law and justice, Yitachu said that there had been an increase in the number of tourists comparatively this year. He, however, added that there were less local visitors at Kisama, perhaps due to events held in different parts of Kohima.
With major events like the National Rock Contest and other shows being held at Indira Gandhi Stadium and other venues in Kohima, local visitors were less at Kisama. Tourists were seen participating in different events of the festival. Earlier on the eve of Hornbill Festival, commissioner and secretary, tourism, I. Himato Zhimomi had declared that this year’s Hornbill Festival would be tourism-oriented, which would give tourists an insight on Naga cultural and indigenous activities. He also highlighted that an estimation of about 200 tourists were expected for the seven-day festival. The commissioner and secretary further stated that the capacity to host tourists in the state was limited by accommodation problem in Kohima. He encouraged Kohima residents to introduce home-stay service in their homes by way of arranging rooms for tourists while constructing new buildings.
