Mizoram woman raped by students

A Mizo teenager was gangraped by a group of Class X and XII students, among them sons of three policemen, hours after a woman suspected to be involved in trafficking handed the girl over to them.
The incident, which took place in this Assam town on Thursday evening but came to light on Saturday. Three of the students accused of the Silchar rape are still at large. Police have so far arrested eight persons. Police came to know about the incident after the liaison officer of Mizoram House lodged a complaint.
Malsuam Thanga (32), a Mizo woman, was arrested for allegedly handing over the 19-year-old victim, a resident of Champai in Mizoram, to the group of students. A suspected trafficker handed over a 19-year-old Mizo girl to a group of 10 students in Silchar, who took turns raping her at a friend’s rented house on Meherab Ali Lane in the Chamragodam area of Silchar on Thursday night.
On Friday morning, when they left, the victim reported the incident to the Mizoram House liaison officer, who lodged a police complaint.
Silchar police station officer-in-charge Shyam Kumar Chauhan said on Saturday a hunt was on for the other accused. The eight arrested, including Thanga, have been sent to judicial custody. The victim was handed over to Mizoram police after medical tests. Those arrested have been identified as Subhadeep Dutta (20), Shankar Dayal Sharma (19), Jalil Laskar (19), Biswajit Rakshit (19), Paplu Das (19), Biju Nayek (19) and Vishal Barman (19). All are students of Class X and XII of a reputed college, a private secondary school, a government higher secondary school and a central school. Three of them are sons of police officers, including the personal security officer of a deputy commissioner and an MLA. Sources said the victim had come to Silchar for business and was trapped by Malsuam Thanga, who has been living in the Sonabarighat here for five years and is married to a local man.
