Mon district observed ‘World Disability Day’ for the first time at Mon Council Hall, on December 3. The programme was organized by district administration under the ‘Remote Area Funding Scheme’ of the ‘National Trust’.
The programme was chaired by Hiazu Meru, SDO (C) Mon, keynote address by Sarah Ritse, ADC Mon. Ritse encouraged the disabled to use their talents and cited examples of success stories of disabled people. She also urged upon the government and the community to be sensitive towards the needs of the disabled such as incorporating barrier free structures.
The Mon district handicap union presented a special song, while its president shared his perspective of living with disability.
Ilika Zhimomi, EAC Mon, talked about empowering persons with disability and highlighted the provisions of the National Trust Act. The medical department the social welfare department and Sarva Shiksha Ahbiyan, Mon also enlightened the disabled people about various provisions for the disabled under their respective depts. Highlights of the programme were distribution of aids and appliances to the beneficiaries identified by SSA, Mon and the social welfare department.
After the conclusion of the formal programme, the medical board headed by the CMO, Mon issued ‘Disability Certificates’ to the eligible persons with disabilities.
