First ever Naga Chilli eating competition held

The ongoing Hornbill Festival- Festival of Festivals witnessed one of the hottest events on its sixth day with the Naga Chilli eating competition organized to promote the Naga Chill, drawing a large crowed.
Amidst cheering and applause, 11 contestants competed at the first ever Naga Chilli eating competition held at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama. James Angami from Kohima won the competition and became richer by Rs.10,000/- cash prize by eating altogether eight red hot Naga Chilli in the given stipulated time of 30 seconds.
His nearest competitor Velüyü Phese-o ate five similar red hot Naga Chilli while H. Pukhu Khiamniungan and Lungin Kuki ate eat four each.
The rest of the competitors ate from half to three Naga Chillies. Two volunteers each from 16 Naga tribes were invited but only 11 took part. The competition which was organized by the department of horticulture was closely monitored by a medical team led by Dr Thorse Katiry and a nurse.
The contestants were thoroughly examined and briefed on the do’s and don’ts before the competition began and was also checked up after completion of the competition.
Parliamentary secretary for law and justice and tourism Yitachu while declaring the competition open said that the Chilli eating competition would become a regular event in the Hornbill festival in the years to come.
He also informed that the competition would be made into two categories - one for the local and the other open to all.
The competition would be telecasted on various news channels across the globe and also uploaded on youtube and other websites.
