Dimapur Chamber of Commerce has refuted the clarification made by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) chief executive officer (CEO) Nikhashe Sema that initiative for streamlining of trade license fees was carried out as there was disparity of rates among different categories of shops.
A DCC statement issued by its president Kasheto Yepthomi said the municipal CEO exorbitantly hiked the rates of trade license fees on the pretext of streamlining the rates of 146 items out of 284 items, which was more than 50% of total items.
Questioning on why there was increase in rate of license fees only if the disparity was found in rates, the DCC said DMC should have rather brought down the rates of some items which were already too high in comparison to other medium towns.
It also pointed out that rates could be changed only by elected civic body or the state government and not by the executive body on the behest of the advisory board.
Meanwhile, DCC termed it unfortunate that, instead of banning sales of calendars and complimenting them to trade license holders, DMC CEO has said that calendars were being sold to well wishers.
Stating that business community was already "under pressure" with many other taxes and mental harassment, the DCC appealed for the government's immediate intervention into the matter to stop "such indiscriminate taxes" on the community.
