Solar streets lamps in Manipur

Manipur which suffers from acute shortage of electricity supply, installation of solar lighting system in villages in valley areas have been started as an alternative source of power. The installation work of the solar street lamps at villages in valley areas has been taken up under the Remote Village Electrification Programme. According to official source, the electrification of villages in valley areas had been recently started by Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA) through gram panchayats, nagar gram panchayats and municipal councils with funds allocated by the Manipur government. The agency had supplied a total of 5736 solar street lighting sets to the local bodies. Out of this 3187 were to 165 gram panchayats and 2549 to 27 to urban local bodies, the source added. Earlier, the installation and distribution of solar lighting systems were concentrated only at the villages in the hill district.
