Brick kiln owners on Thursday said they would urge the DMC to revise the current rate of brick as they were suffering huge losses. Citing increase in labour cost and other raw materials, the owners maintained that they would not be able to sustain their business, if the present rate continued. It may be mentioned that the DMC and district administration had fixed the rate at `4.20 per brick. “Even if we sell a block of brick at ` 5.50 paise (A class), we still do not make any profit” they averred. The owners said that they would even close down their business and move to neighboring state of Assam, if their memorandum to raise the rate (to be submitted to DMC) was not addressed. There are around 38 brick kiln owners, majority being run by non-locals.
The issue of raising the rate of brick comes a day after two brick kiln owners (Ganesh and Janki) were penalized by DMC with a fine of `50,000 for selling bricks above the fixed rate. Clarifying to the penalization by DMC on its two members, the owners claimed that the stocked up bricks were for an advanced booking and not as alleged. They also admitted that some of their employees might be involved in selling the bricks at high rates.
NCSU pleads on brick size
Nagaland Contractors’ & Suppliers’ Union (NCSU) today requested the civic bodies in Dimapur to insist the brickfields on maintaining standard brick size.
NCSU president Pele Khezhie and general secretary John Kath in a joint release urged the civic authorities to enforce standard size of bricks and penalize the defaulters.
Meanwhile, the NCSU also lauded the joint team of DMC, CTC and ad-hoc town council, Purana Bazaar for penalizing two brick-kilns in Dimapur for selling construction item above prescribed rate Nov. 17 last.
