Seminar on disaster preparedness

A one-day seminar on mass awareness programme on disaster preparedness was conducted by National Service Scheme at Ura Academy Hall, Kohima on Friday.
The seminar was attended by students from various colleges in Kohima.
State Liaison Officer NSS, Kenneth Punyü said NSS volunteers play a big role in disaster management and preparedness. They have the responsibility of creating awareness on mitigating disaster, he said. He also said that the seminar can help volunteers learn to protect themselves and help others when calamities strike.
Resource person Aja Zinyü, speaking on basics of disaster management, said disaster was disruption of normal patterns of human’s life which increases community’s needs. He pointed out Nagaland was at high risk earthquake zone and other calamities like cyclone, flood, landslide, etc. Zinyü advocated the need to be prepared for such disaster through proper construction of structures and buildings and preparedness of personal safety.
Dr. Hovithal Sothu, state coordinator, disaster management cell, ATI, dwelt on non-structural aspects of disaster and its mitigation through interior arrangement. He also spoke on various types of natural calamities and man-made hazards which cause disaster.
The seminar was organized in collaboration with NSS Kohima unit and sponsored by Urban Development department.
