As the Indian National Congress (INC) completes its 125th foundation on December 28, state Congress Legislature Party leader, Tokheho Yepthomi has highlighted the achievements of the party in 125 years of its existenece. The plenary session was held at New Delhi from December 18 – 20.
Tokheho said that the INC elected Sonia Gandhi during a difficult period when the party lost Rajiv Gandhi and other prominent leaders of the party. He said Sonia accepted the challenge to rebuild Congress party and prepared to counter the rise of communal forces.
He recalled that the people of India reposed their faith in the leadership and ideology of Congress by giving it mandate in two successive elections held in 2004 and 2009 which allowed coalition of progressive secular parties.
The CLP leader said that the party on completion of 125 years had adopted several resolutions including political resolutions where the party has reiterated its commitment to continue and to expeditiously work to bring peace and development in the northeastern states. He said that the party reiterated the protection of the territorial integrity enshrined in the constitution of India including Arunachal Pradesh.
It was pointed out that almost all northeast insurgent groups were now in talks with government appointed interlocutors. The Congress party assured the citizens of northeast that it would continue to strive to expeditiously resolve all outstanding issues that concerned their welfare. The Congress which was in power in most of the northeast states pledged to continue its work to bring peace and development to the people of these states in accordance with the ambitious goals of North-Eastern Region Vision – 2020.”
Tokheho said that the UPA government has already ushered in the rights revolution in the country – the constitutional right to local self government across the range of subjects listed in the eleventh and twelfth schedules, the right to information etc.
Tokheho reminded that it was the Congress party which in the 90’s had implemented the policy of 27% reservation in employment and 27 % reservation to OBCs in education. The INC urged the government to continue with its efforts both legislative and administrative to ensure that all reservation quotas were filled in a strict and timely manner.
The Congress admitted that the implementation of pro-poor laws and delivery of pro-poor programmes have remained tardy especially in some of the Congress ruled states despite the government enacting laws to lift millions of poor out of poverty providing adequate funds to the states. It urged the government to ensure that outcomes of such programmes have the desired social and economic impact.
As the Congress party completes 125 years of foundation, the Legislature members called the people of Nagaland to prepare and march along with the rest of the nation to usher an era of permanent peace and development in the state. The CLP called upon the people to dedicate themselves and bring about changes in personal and public life to build a better society for the coming days. The CLP wished every citizens a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
