Sharmila presented Signature Peace Awards

Another feather has been added to the ‘Iron Lady’ of Manipur, Irom Sharmila, when an Assam based Signature Training Centre conferred ‘Sarva Guna Saparna 2010 award’ to her Monday.
The Guwahati (Assam) based right group handed over the award to Sharmila at JNIMS security ward comprising cash prize of `25, 000 and a citation.
While handing over the award officials of the group said the award was the recognition of her sacrifice for the cause of human rights of the people, particularly for the people of the Northeastern region.
“She is sacrificing her life for the cause of the people of this region. Her fast has stretched over 10 years and may carry on for many more. Her protest is an uncompromising call to the conscience,” Madumati Sheikia, principal of the training centre said.
Sharmila has also won several prestigious awards in India and abroad, including South Korea’s Gwangju Human Rights award, the latest one being Rabindranath Tagore award-2010, comprising a case award of `51 lakh, a gold medal, a citation and a shawl.
Irom Sharmila has been on an indefinite fast since November 2000 to protest the killing of innocent people by security forces in Manipur.
She has been arrested innumerable times and nasal fed forcefully, but the young woman has continued her protest to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, a controversial law promulgated to curb insurgency in the state.
