Divine Connection, Nagaland’s seasoned Christian rock band Monday ousted Kaivalya of Kolkata to win the “Best Rock Band in India” title at the finale of MTV’s popular reality show Rock On 2010 (Desi Beats).
In an exclusive conversation with Nagaland Post over phone, band members of Divine Connection said they were most grateful to the Almighty for the win. Although the band was initially apprehensive to take on Hindi songs regarding diction and pronunciation, they managed to cope with the challenge to emerge as the winner among 10 competing bands from across the country vying for the “Best Rock Band in India” title.
Divine Connection performed three numbers at the grand finale of the show, including judges’ choice ‘Yeh Desh’, band’s original ‘Its Love’ and Bollywood classic ‘Aa Dekhen Zaara’, which apparently impressed the judges- Indian Ocean bassist, Rahul Ram; Bollywood music producer, Pritam; Bollywood music directors Salim-Sulaiman- enough into voting the quartet in over other nine contending bands.
With the MTV Rock On 2010 (Desi Beats) win, Divine Connection swept away a grand combo prize consisting of a Gibson Les Paul guitar, Gibson Thunderbird Bass guitar, Roland V Drums and a chordless microphone. Besides the opportunity to feature at MTV concert, the band would also get music video and album recording deals with MTV.
Divine Connection, who released their debut album El-Roi in 2008, was earlier adjudged as 1st Runners Up at the first Hornbill National Rock Contest 2006 and clinched the Best Vocals subtitle at the same. The band has also performed on stage at all the districts of Nagaland and at various ‘rock capitals’ of the country including Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong and featured in ‘Pattayapraise’ 2009 at Pattaya, Thailand. Earlier this year, the band had performed at Mokokchung and Kohima as part of their Rock Revival 2010 concert and also at Shillong on more than one occasion. Mention may also be made here that MTV Rock On 2010 (Desi Beats) runners up Kaivalya of Kolkata holds the 2nd runner up title of Hornbill National Rock Contest 2009 at Kohima.
The finale of MTV Rock On 2010 (Desi Beats) is yet to be telecast. One may catch Divine Connection battling out on the show on Saturdays at 7pm @MTV.
