Vehicle recovered; 4 including NSCN (I-M) activist held

Kohima police recovered a stolen Mahindra Max Jeep and arrested five persons including an NSCN (I-M) functionary near the outfit’s designated camp at Chumukhuma village Tuesday.
The arrested were identified as ‘ss’ Capt. Rengpu Lamkan (34) alias Koko, Mhd. Moinu (25) taxi driver, Sonahal Singh (23) mechanic, Kamrul Islam (25) taxi driver and Bijoy Das (30). While the first four persons were arrested on the spot where the vehicle was recovered, the latter was arrested Wednesday from Razhu point. The main accused was said to be absconding and manhunt on to nab him. The NSCN (I-M) cadre was sent to judicial custody after being produced to court Wednesday while the rest of the accused were kept for 48 hours police remand.
The Mahindra Max Jeep with registration No AS 03E/3556 belonging to the project manager of the National Project Construction Company India (NPCCI)-NER Jaswant Singh was stolen from inside the 16 Assam Riffle Camp, Kohima on the December 23 at around 10 pm. Based on the complaint lodged by the NPCCI officer, a case was registered at the North Police Station and investigation carried out.
Based on suspicion, a police team had also gone to Changtongya on Monday but without any success. However, on their return to Kohima Tuesday and based on specific information, the police team rushed to Chumukhuma Village and found the vehicle along with the four accused on the spot.
It was learnt that the official driver of the NPCCI identified as one Dipu had applied for leave and handed over the vehicle key to the project manager and left on the day the vehicle stolen. Later, the vehicle was found missing. He reportedly stole the vehicle and contacted the NSCN (I-M) cadre to sell off the vehicle. After striking a deal, he took the vehicle to Chumukhuma at around 1 am on December 24 and left after receiving Rs 1 lakh. He again returned to Chumukhuma along with fresh documents and number plate with Mokokchung registration.
