Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and Assam Power Generation Company Limited (APGCL) have entered into a nonbinding memorandum of understanding (MoU) for development and implementation of new power projects in the State of Assam. An MoU to this effect was signed between the Managing Director of NRL, Dr BK Das and MD APGCL, Syedain Abbasi at a function held on Friday at Guwahati in the presence of senior officials of both the companies. The MoU elaborates on the area of cooperation between the two companies and provides for joint evaluation of new prospective power projects by carrying out feasibility studies and environmental impact assessment.
These initiatives would identify viable power projects for possible implementation, subject to receiving necessary approvals. Execution of the projects, if approved, is proposed to be carried out by forming a joint venture company promoted by both NRL and APGCL. “Signing of the MoU heralds a new beginning of collaboration between a downstream oil company and a State government entity by way of sharing expertise, knowledge and resources for overall benefit of the State,” mentioned a statement from the NRL.
According to the NRL authorities, this would be NRL’s initiative towards entering the power sector. The step has been taken in lines with the NRL’s strategy to diversify into other areas of energy business for its growth and expansion and its commitment to contribute towards the development of the region.
