A hideout of the breakaway faction of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was busted Sunday and five rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) were recovered, police said.
According to PTI, five powerful rocket propellant grenades, believed to have been passed by ULFA to a militant group in Meghalaya, were seized today by security forces during a raid in East Garo Hills district.
Acting on revelations from five arrested cadres of the Garo National Liberation Army, a combing operation was launched by security forces at Soinang in the Mendipathar police station area late last night, however no militant was arrested in the early morning raid.
The faction was led Joking Momin, who was killed Friday. He, along with three others rebels, were killed in a gun battle with the commandos of the Special Weapons and Tactics team.
Momin and few other militants had deserted GNLA due to differences with GNLA chairman Champion R. Sangma and the commander-in-chief Sohan D. Shira.
Meanwhile, the police suspect that the GNLA had procured the explosives from the banned ULFA, which also has presence in the area bordering Assam. GNLA is a militant group fighting for a homeland for the Garo tribe in Meghalaya. The outfit is involved in large-scale extortion and kidnapping of coal miners in the area.
